Trioscapes Confirm Tour Dates For April

Dan Briggs, Walter Fancourt, and Matt Lynch: the over-the-top trio appropriately known as Trioscapes, will once again be taking their instrumental show on the road. This April, fans can catch Trioscapes in Tenesse, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Puerto Rico. The first two dates (April 6th-8th) will be with fellow virtuoso Evan Brewer (The Faceless). Additionally, on April 12th in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Trioscapes will be holding a "master class" for fans.

Bassist Dan Briggs elaborates on the master class: "We'll be talking about how we started, the different ways we write, breaking down sections of songs, talking about soloing and improvising, and opening it up for questions from the crowd."

The complete list of confirmed dates can be found below, as well as on the band's facebook page. A live performance of "Curse of the Ninth" from Separate Realities can be seen on metalblade.com/trioscapes. The video exemplifies the band's immense talent and creativity and is a must-see for anyone remotely interested in all things progressive.

"prog-jazz mania with relentless, wailing saxophones and off-kilter drum fills that would make most fans of Between The Buried And Me wonder what the fuck was put into their orange juice this morning." Alternative Press Magazine

"combining technical metal and jazz in a way that underlines an unseen connection between the two styles." BloodyGoodHorror.com

"Trioscapes is not just a prototypical jazz fusion band that you'd hear in some smoky club as background music. These songs have a groove to them, a pulse that beats to the tight-as-a-knot rhythm section." Lambgoat.com

Bassist Dan Briggs offers the following comment: "Thanks to everyone who checked out "Separate Realities" in its first week of being available, and to everyone at Metal Blade Records. Somehow they were able to trick people into thinking this is a jazz record! Stay weird friends."

Fans can order Separate Realities and watch the video for Blast Off now at metalblade.com/trioscapes.

Trioscapes started in the summer of 2011 when bassist Dan Briggs (Between the Buried and Me) contacted Walter Fancourt (tenor saxophone/flute) and Matt Lynch (drums) about working up a rendition of the Mahavishnu Orchestra classic "Celestial Terrestrial Commuters". The group also messed around with a few original ideas with the intent of playing a one-off live show. However, after rehearsing the material and playing the show, the group decided the music was so demanding and fun to perform that there should be more of a future for the project. A few more songs were written near the end of the summer and a full length album was recorded the first week of October with Jamie King in Winston-Salem, NC. Trioscapes combines elements of 70s fusion with progressive rock, dark syncopated grooves, a flare for the psychedelic, and an unabashed love for both quirky Zappa-ish melodies and thunderous abrasive trade-off lines.

Trioscapes is also currently working on live dates for June, July and September. For the most up to date information, "like" Trioscapes on facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/trioscapes.

BTBAM Bassist Comments On New Record

Vince Neilstein of MetalSucks recently spoke with BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME bassist Dan Briggs about his new jazz-fusion project TRIOSCAPES (out today via Metal Blade). Towards the end of the interview, Briggs elaborated on what the next BTBAM record, which has now been completely written, will sound like:

I think when people hear what we’ve been writing for the last few months, they’re going to realize that we have evolved. [Laughs] It’s really hard to describe this record because I’m still taking it all in. Good lord, it was a lot of fun to write. We pushed it. We pushed it pretty hard. The Trioscapes stuff really helped me because I feel like it unlocked me back into the world of really, really pushing myself and opening myself up to new ideas.

Walter, the saxophone player in Trioscapes, is 20 (seven years younger than me) but he’s a wealth of musical knowledge far beyond the influences of what I have. I’ve showed him a lot of stuff, but it’s different stuff. It’s stuff that people in our world are very accustomed to. He’s never heard of Meshuggah, for example. He blows my mind with some afro-beat stuff that’s out of this world that I’ve never heard before. It gets me thinking in a new way and all of a sudden I’m hearing rhythms a little differently and melodies a little differently. I can bring that to Between the Buried and Me and raise a few eyebrows with those guys. They’re like “why not? Let’s try it”. It’s pretty cool stuff.

Is Parallax Part 2 going to be an afro-beat record?

[Laughter] Absolutely, yes, 100%. No, but it’s a very exciting record. I don’t want to talk too much about the difference between the Parallax EP and this one, but I knew going into writing the EP that we didn’t have a lot of time. We’d been touring for nine months straight, and when we had a little bit of time I went and toured with Orbs right away. I came back and we did the EP in a month or two. With this one I feel like it’s the next logical step after what we were doing with Colors andThe Great Misdirect as far as a full album and really telling the story well. It’s a crazy, crazy full-on concept record, and it feels great and really cohesive. I really think it’s some of the most exciting music we’ve written. I’m really excited to get into the studio and make it happen.

Trioscapes Premieres Title Track From "Separate Realities"

The title track from the debut offering from Trioscapes, Separate Realities, will be debuting today on highly popular music destination Sputnikmusic.com. Separate Realities is an eleven-and-a-half minute cut that highlights many of the elements the progressive trio has to offer. It also exemplifies how it's possible to sound "heavy" without the use of a customary electric guitar. Through bass guitar, saxophone, and drums (and a handful of other instruments), Trioscapes manages to weave their way through multiple genres, moods, and sound scapes all while playing music as relentlessly technical as it is catchy. Listen to the title track now HERE. Sputnikmusic is a premier source for music reviews, news, and features spanning indie, metal, and punk.

Trioscapes currently has one show confirmed for this May to celebrate the release of the CD on Metal Blade Records. The 12" LP is also available via Dan Briggs's own Hogweed & Fugue Records. Both will be available for purchase at this show. More shows are currently being confirmed.

YES! Weekly, the Greensboro, NC entertainment magazine, just named Dan Briggs the region's best bassist and Trioscapes the best new band. YES! praises Briggs' work: "his marathon bass runs for the progressive death metal quintet [BTBAM] are well noted, Briggs' work with the newly formed Trioscapes to this point is equally impressive. The abrupt time signature changes remain, but his style in the fiery jazz-fusion trio recalls Jonas Hellborg considered cadences in the Mahavishnu Orchestra mixed with a little bit of Bill Laswell fuzz bass." A track from Separate Realities can be heard and the album can be pre-ordered now at http://www.metalblade.com/trioscapes. Separate Realities will be available May 8th in North America and May 7th in Europe.
