Thinning The Herd: NYC Trio Releases New Track

Today, New York City-based THINNING THE HERD triumphantly releases another new song from their pending second studio album, the Steve Albini-recorded Freedom From The Known.

The six-minute riff-wrangling anthem “Sludge” stomps triumphantly through smooth, bluesy metallic rock riffs and thunders with great bass tone on a slow-paced transcendental sort of journey which gives way to  stampeding stoner/classic rock jam-outs and back, boasting an almost desert-rock approach while being conceived and recorded in the most massive urban territories of the country.

Get tripped-up by some “Sludge” via Stereokiller RIGHT HERE.

THINNING THE HERD also previously released their video for “Never Wanted” viewable HERE.

Following their debut EP and debut LP, Oceans Rise, founding THINNING THE HERD vocalist/guitarist Gavin Spielman recruited a new rhythm section in 2012, bringing bassist Wes Edmonds and drummer Rick Cimato (ex-Locked In A Vacancy) on board. The new lineup honed recorded the sophomore album Freedom From The Known at Electrical Audio Studios with studio guru Steven Albini and had filmed a new video for the album, and as they were preparing to release the album, Rick Cimato was tragically killed in a car accident over the 2012 holiday season. Mourning the loss of their friend, Spielman and Edmonds hosted several local listening parties of the album for local fans and friends to honor Rick and his family, and then brought in drummer Garth Macaleavey to execute the new songs live, as Cimato would have wished.

With nearly forty-five minutes of brand new material, the varied Freedom From The Known continues the THINNING THE HERD tradition of avoiding genre pigeonholing, merging their blues, jam, sludge and NYHC influences into their expansive doom/rock foundation, where party-hard buildups melt into boundary-free jam sessions. Freedom From The Known will be released on CD and digitally via the band’s own Saint Marks Records on May 9th, 2013.

Live THINNING THE HERD shows and regional tour plans are in the works for the immediate future, and will be announced in the coming days and through the Summer months in support of Freedom From The Known; stay tuned.

New Eibon track, II out April 17th

Parisian blackened sludge/doom horde EIBON have announced the release of their new full-length on 180 gram vinyl and CD. "II" is due out on April 17th via Throatruiner Records and Aesthetic Death. After two splits, one MCD and one full-length, "II" marks the band's bleakest and most ambitious material to date. Recorded in a live setting by Sylvain Biguet (Comity, Revok, As We Draw…) then mixed and mastered by Francis Caste (Arkhon Infaustus, Kickback, Cowards…), "The Void Settlers" and "Elements Of Doom" are two massive twenty-minutes tracks where EIBON refine their very own vision of slow and painful music, infusing their raw sludge/doom with black metal and more atmospheric parts.

Pilgrim Kick Off Tour With Mares Of Thrace Tonight

Rhode Island's doom-doers PILGRIM will kick off a short but punishing run of tour dates tonight with Calgary's metallic sludgesters Mares Of Thrace and Brooklyn metallic hardcore outfit Primitive Weapons. The festivities will commence in Boston and plunder its way through the Northeastern and Midwest US.

Comments PILGRIM guitarist/vocalist The Wizard "Getting back out on the road excites us in ways no voluptuous wench or black grimoire of spells ever could. The time has come to quest the Eastern roads and spread our misery once again, to places familiar and new. Astaroth be praised."

In addition, PILGRIM will be headlining this year's edition of The Stoner Hands of Doom Fest, one of the premier annual gatherings for underground heavy/stoner/doom music in North America. Set to take place August 30 through September 2 at El n Gee Club in New London, Connecticut, PILGRIM will appear alongside the likes of Earthride, Revelation, When The Deadbolt Breaks and more.

PILGRIM Confirmed Tour Dates
w/ Mares Of Thrace, Primitive Weapons
7/31/2012 O'Briens – Boston, MA
8/01/2012 Columbus Club – North Providence, RI
8/02/2012 Cherry St. Station – Wallingford, CT
8/03/2012 Saint Vitus – Brooklyn, NY
8/04/2012 Broadway Bar – Amityville, NY
8/05/2012 Ottobar – Baltimore, MD
8/06/2012 Kung Fu Necktie – Philadelphia, PA
8/07/2012 The Depot – York, PA
8/08/2012 Pirates Cove – Cleveland, OH
8/09/2012 Ruby Tuesday – Columbus, OH
8/10/2012 Cobra Lounge – Chicago, IL
8/31/2012 SHoD @ El N Gee Club – New London, CT

PILGRIM come to the Metal Blade roster via Alan Nemtheanga's imprint, Poison Tongue Records. The doom trio consists of: drummer Krolg Splinterfist, the Slayer of Man, bassist Count Elric the Soothsayer and The Wizard. With a mix of destruction, misery and beauty, these young disciples of doom blend a surprisingly original sword 'n' sorcery feel with the classic chest-caving heaviness of the masters, Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Reverend Bizarre and Pentagram. Their thick walls of majestically darkened guitar, massive booming bass, and dangerously powerful yet calculated drumming lull listeners into an intense dream-like trance, abducting them to places they never knew were dwelling within their own minds. Commented Pitchfork: "…in a realm where the old-school and the experimental push against one another in an eternally dynamic non-equilibrium, it's certainly not about who your influences are. It's, of course, about how you use them. PILGRIM simply have fun with these predecessors, renewing old sounds with the zeal of teenage boys worshiping cheap Sabbath posters on their bedroom walls and the skills of players who've been at this for a while. PILGRIM sing about devils and tears, paying dues and surviving adventures, taking care to touch on most of the requisite tropes while not pushing any one too far... This is an excellent debut from a preternaturally developed upstart."

Monarch Announce Album Details

French drone/sludge collective MONARCH this week confirm the details of their recently completed sixth album, Omens -- the band's first release for Maryland-based At A Loss Recordings -- now confirmed for public consumption on February 28th.

Monarch-Omens. from Sabbat Noir on Vimeo.

A thirty-four minute down-tempo/down-tuned ethereal funeral dirge comprised of three tracks, Omens perfectly personifies what fans have come to embrace about MONARCH since their 2005 inception, their caustic, crushing style of slow-motion apocalyptic doom coming alive with haunting moans and layered, ghostly shrieks throughout Omens' entirety. The record features artwork by Yann Black and Valérie Poulin and will be released as a six-panel digipak CD in an initial pressing of 1,000 copies.

MONARCH recorded Omens over a four month period in four different countries with four different producers -- Osaka, Japan by Hironori Ochi @ Kakurega, Melbourne, Australia by  Neil Thomason @ Head Gap, Montreal, Canada by Matt Cartman @ Crane Studio, and Chicago, IL by Sanford Parker @ Engine Studios -- then mixed by Sanford Parker and mastered by Collin Jordan at The Boiler Room (Twilight, Ministry, Yob). The album features newest member Rob Shaffer (Dark Castle, YOB) along with guitarist Shiran Kaïdine (Year of No Light), bassist MicHell Bidegain, and as always the ethereal, penetrating vocals of Emilie Bresson. The record also includes guest appearances by Atsuchi Sano (Birushanah), Yailen Munoz (Ensorcelor), Eric Quach (Thisquietarmy), Jeanne Peluard (The Sparteens) and Robert MacManus (ex-Grey Daturas, ex-Monarch).
