Rival Sons Announce Limited Edition Record Store Day UK Vinyl

RIVAL SONS have revealed that they will once again be offering a limited edition vinyl release for this year's Record Store Day in the UK and Europe, which takes place on Saturday, April 20th.

Founded in 2007 and officially kicked off in 2008 by METALLICA, Record Store Day takes place on the third Saturday of every April and brings together artists and independently-owned record stores around the world to celebrate the art of music.  Special vinyl and CD released and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and sold in independent stores.

To celebrate Record Store Day UK 2013, Earache Records and RIVAL SONS will be releasing an exclusive 10" vinyl picture disc, strictly limited to 1000 copies.  The picture disc will feature the following tracks:

"As we've talked about quite often, all the band are big vinyl junkies.  Travelling all over the globe, it's exciting to see how many people around the world are becoming enlivened by this vinyl trend - as they should!  Vinyl is finding its place once again and improving the way we listen to and enjoy music.  Living in the digital age, we've begun to realize how much quality and sonic experience we sacrifice for convenience, and how much is gained from hearing a recording sounding closer to the product we (as musicians and recording artists) intended to be enjoyed.  That said, we're always excited to deliver something cool for Record Store Day, and this one coming up is one of my personal favorites.

"What more could there be, you ask?!  Well, we had a friend of ours create comic book style covers for the front and back of the jacket.  The front depicting Pt. 1 and the back depicting Pt. 2.  This release is very close to my heart, and something I think our fans will really dig.  Limited to only 1000 copies... Rival Sons Announce 2013 Tour Dates Including European Tour

Long Beach band RIVAL SONS kick 2013 off in style announcing dates in the USA, Canada and a return to Europe in March supporting their latest album HEAD DOWN.

Guitarist Scott Holiday comments:

"Now that we've made it through the holidays, filled our bellies with fruitcake and hot cocoa, opened all our presents and survived the Mayan calendar, we are ready to get back on the road. We'll start the year with a few west coast US dates before moving into a Canadian tour. We may even catch a few more US dates on the way home. We also have UK and European dates on the books for March/April and of course, we'll be back through for the summer festivals.

"Lots of plans in the works for 2013. Yep, it's gonna be a busy year of nonstop rock'n'roll for us boys. Chinese calendar says its the 'year of the Sons', Jimmy Page likes our band, and my Grandma says she 'hears us on the radio all the time'. If that's not the planets aligning I dunno what is. Rival Sons To Perform On Bob Harris Show On BBC Radio 2

RIVAL SONS are set to join the legendary Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 this Saturday night/Sunday morning at midnight UK time for the 'Bob Harris Sunday' show, where they will be premiering a brand new track.

The band will be appearing as special guests alongside Sir Tom Jones, where they will be talking about their upcoming new album, HEAD DOWN, and performing three acoustic tracks, including a brand new track titled "Jordan".

"I've grown up on re-runs of the Old Grey Whistle Test... That show has been quite significant to my musical upbringing.  It's really one of the greatest musical programs EVER, in my opinion.  I think about Humble Pie doing 'Black Coffee', The Faces doing 'I'm Losing You', and so, so, SO many more.  These performances were better than the album versions, capturing rock 'n' roll at its most magical, and Bob Harris has kept up the tradition with his BBC radio show.  So, it was a great honor to be invited down to his show, and chat, and to play a few tunes.  We wanted to give him something special, so we performed a song off the new album ('Jordan') for the first time on his show.  Bob was great to chat with, charming as ever, and totally kind to us.  It's fellas like Mr. Harris that've helped reveal some of the special magic of rock 'n' roll, and in hanging out with him, it felt like a great reminder of that magic."

Rival Sons Guitarist Talks About New Album

RIVAL SONS recently finished recording their highly-anticipated new album, which is due to be released on Earache Records in late August.

The band recorded the as-yet untitled follow-up to their 2011 breakthrough album, PRESSURE & TIME, with Grammy-nominated producer DAVE COBB (JAMIE JOHNSON, SHOOTER JENNINGS) and Grammy-winning engineer VANCE POWELL (JACK WHITE, THE WHITE STRIPES, KINGS OF LEON) in Nashville, Tennesee, where they worked with some of the exact equipment used by the likes of ELVIS PRESLEY and BUDDY HOLLY at the legendary Sun Studio.

Grammy-nominated producer DAVE COBB comments:

"The making of the new album could be compared to a hurricane - it started off with a cool breeze, then quickly turned into raging winds and chaos, to being a tranquil calm in the eye of the storm for a couple of days, then to pure destruction, and then finishing with the most beautiful rainbow you've ever seen when it was completed!

"We recorded the album through mainly gear from the '50s and '60s - all old American tube stuff augmented by a vintage 1970s API console, all live with lotsa attitude and bleed.  We even wrangled up the original mono ampex slap tape machine from Sun Studios from Memphis and the bass DI was from the Quanset Hut in Nashville where it had been used on Buddy Holly, Elvis, even Patsy Cline."

Grammy-winning engineer VANCE POWELL adds:

"A great combination of familiar sounds presented in a completely new way.  It was great working with them."

RIVAL SONS guitarist SCOTT HOLIDAY talks about recording the new album:

"One of the really great things about David is his complete commitment to his gear obsession.  I'm pretty nerdy with my own gear for studio and stage, but Dave just takes it to a whole other level with his studio.  Compressors, pre-amps and other assorted gadgets from the most famous studios in the history of recording, including Sun Records, Decca, Capitol in Nashville etc...  This is equipment that was used by The Who, Elvis Presley etc.  Pretty incredible.  It was also great to have Vance Powell to engineer and mix, who has the same fetish for gear collecting, with a special penchant for 'unusual and hard to get'.

"We use a lot of old equipment, but the intent isn't to make an 'old sounding record'...  We use that incredible equipment simply because it sounds the best.  Likewise, we'll use a lot of the old recording techniques, like distant-micing the drums, a la Glen Johns, using old huge analog plate reverbs, distant-micing on the guitars, and simply tracking everything together live in the same room.

"I used my live guitars on the album: a '62 Fender Jazz Master, a '65 Gibson non-reverse Firebird V, and a custom historic Firebird VII, as well as some of David's guitar collection too, including a '60 Gibson 335 with Bigsby, a Gretsch White Penguin, a '52 Gibby Les Paul conversion, and an early '60s Harmony Rocket, a la The Kinks!  A few of the main amps were an old '40s Supro with a little 6" speaker, a Silvertone 2x12, and a VOX Berkley.  Also many cool, old and new fuzz boxes, and a ton of other pedals.  A cornucopia of fuzz rock colors and flavors.

"It was a very 'chew you up and spit you out' kind of process...  Working with immediate decisions and performances day after day.  It becomes even more intense when you're using a lot of first takes.  For me, it's a mission to give the listener something as pure, honest and unadulterated as possible, which seemingly is the antithesis to the trend in mainstream music right now.  The goal (tonally and song-wise) was to really spread our wings and reflect the past year...  Playing live every night, doing a lot of improvising and exploring musically, and to open up some new territory, topically and sonically."
