So recently it was revealed that SAMCRO member Juice is half black. It was hinted that this may be a problem. For obvious reasons even the hint that this could be a problem has created some controversy. Sons Of Anarchy head honcho Kurt Sutter recently started the discussion on this hot topic. As a fan of this show, I have to say that I am disappointed that so many lack the faith in this show's writers. With a show like Sons Of Anarchy you have to expect them to keep the show interesting. To do that they have to offer plot twists that not just hit hot button issues, but exploit those hot button issues and expose them for what they are.
We also must applaud Kurt Sutter and company for bringing up these issues. Sure those annoying WB style shows bring up these kinds of things all the time, but when they do it they are just preaching to the converted. It is when shows like Sons Of Anarchy are able to work with these issues without softening the rough edges that we stop preaching to the converted. There are still people that hold to these racist beliefs and many of those people are probably watching this show. So this show is the one that can do the most good. Not just because the people that still believe this crap are watching, but also because Sons Of Anarchy can work the topic without worrying about being too controversial. Kurt Sutter and company can not only bring up the subject without the normal filters, but are able to have it help the show instead of hurt it. A show like this revels in controversy like this. The other shows that bring it up would be destroyed if they approached a topic like this in the way Sons Of Anarchy does.
I also must point out that they are pointing out that even bikers who are not racist feel the need to work within the racist walls that still exist today. So even people within this culture who are against this line of thinking are afraid to stand up against it. Sons Of Anarchy is pointing this out and with pointing this out are helping to wear down those walls. For this they should be applauded.
It is for these reasons that I am excited to see how this plot line develops over the next few episodes.
