Following a rather long break after 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious, actor Paul Walker had one of Hollywood's busier schedules during 2005. Somehow he found the time to star in Running Scared in addition to Into the Blue and Eight Below. Oddly enough, Eight Below and Running Scared hit theaters nearly at the same time: February 17 and February 24, respectively. However, the two movies could not be any more different, which is a very good thing. Along with Walker, Cameron Bright (The Butterfly Effect, Birth) and Chazz Palminteri (The Usual Suspects) star in Running Scared. While Running Scared will never win any awards for screen-writing or original ideas, it just may win one for cinematography, if the powers that be at the Academy Awards didn't look down on "violent movies" so much. Fuck em'. Anyway, regarding Wayne Kramer's script, even though it is one of the more outrageous and absurd scripts written in recent history, it also makes the movie great. Yes, Running Scared's greatness comes from its main weakness if that makes any sense. As the direct result of an outrageous script/plot, the pace is so fast that the movie never lets up, and in turn dull moments do not exist. In the end, Running Scared serves as a movie which does not display "cinematic brilliance" in any way, shape, or form, but certainly does not fall short in the entertainment department, which is the most important one of all anyway, right? Last but not least, I decided to review this movie because I felt that it did not get a fair shot in Portland theaters since it was only here for two weeks. However, I was lucky enough to catch what is a truly kick-ass thriller with many blood-bath ensuing shootings and a higher "fuck count" than Casino. Yes, the word fuck is probably used more in this movie than it is in Casino, and on that note, Running Scared can even be looked at as a movie in the vein of that one, or Goodfella's, but in a more "tongue in cheek" way. All in all, I just hope that more people who may not have heard about Running Scared without this review will check it out and enjoy the ride. ![]()
