So here we have the latest release from classic rock legends Foghat. It's a live cd, so there are a few songs from this I was already familiar with. I think Foghat is one of those bands where most people know a ton of their music, but don't know the song is a Foghat song. So as this two disc set plays you will run into a few songs you already know. However, most of this will be new to even most Foghat fans. There are a ton of songs I have never heard before, so it is like a new cd with a few hits sprinkled here and there.

This is an extremely well recorded and mixed live release. The mix is so clear it makes me wonder how much post work was done in a studio afterwards. It's got the energy of a great live cd, but the sound quality of a big budgeted studio release. Many Foghat fans may not accept Charlie Huhn on vocals, but anyone with an open mind can hear that the new guy fits this band very well. He has the perfect balance between maintaining the same basic style one would expect, while giving the band his own fresh spin to it all. With the addition of lead guitarist Bryan Bassett as well, drummer Roger Earl and bassist Craig MacGregor have made sure that Foghat is a band that still has some life in it.

This two disc thing comes in a nice fold out digipack with several sweet looking photos from the live set. Although I prefer the durability of a plastic jewel case, I have to admit that presentations like this do look really nice when you first get them. I have yet to figure out a way to keep them from wearing out quickly though.

I do have two minor complaints. There is a guitar solo and a drum solo on the cd. Now I can understand why bands do solos in a live situation. I can also understand what it adds to a DVD release. In both those situations you have the visual to back it all up. With a cd all you have is the audio and it comes off like an overly long intro. I can only speak for myself, but I would rather have a song than a guitar or drum solo. Maybe that is just a personal thing? Am I the only one who feels this way?

Disc two on here has four more songs from the El Cajon California show that made up the first disc. Then the band offers a rehearsal demo version of the song "Trouble, Trouble". I found it interesting that this studio track sounded just as live as the actual live songs. I would not have noticed the switch from live to rehearsal studio if I hadn't just looked at the track listing on the back cover. The band then follows this with 6 songs from Millbrook Sound Studios that were recorded in January of 2007. I have to say that the songs "Chevrolet" & "I'm a Rock n' Roller" have to be the weakest song on here. Unlike every other song on this two disc set, these stinkers are repetitive and a little annoying.

So did this thing Rock My Monkey? I would say more than I honestly thought it would. Is it because this is so full of great new material that I liked it so much? I was shocked at how this didn't sound dated at all. If you are looking for some straight up rock in the classic style, but want to hear new songs, this cd is what you need. Now I am left wondering if I would like the first live cd as much as I did this one. Hmmm?
