So before I talk about the music of Eternal Descent, I want to talk about the artwork that came with this thing. I thought it was a major release at first because the packaging was so amazing. It's done in anime style, but better than I have ever seen any band do it before. Now I am not just talking about one picture on the front cover. No, this has a full fold out booklet with 5 full panels (the 6th is for credits). I know jack and shit about anime, but I think this is an original character the band has created on the cover. She is much hotter than Iron Maiden's Eddy or Megadeth's Vic Rattlehead. She is a mascot that gets me excited in more ways than one! Oh yeah, the guitaist is done in anime for the back cover. It looks cool too.

It's like really soft industrial pop with massive guitar masturbation behind it. I have listened to it several times to figure out what I think and I still can't decide. The vocals are very sexy female vocals. I think if they put thicker guitars more up front and got rid of the guitar solo loop in the background I would love it. The basic structure of the songs are great, but something just isn't right with the little experiment they tried here. When the guitars mellow out they should be more up front and thicker.

Doing some research on the band I found out that the guitarist is the main leader of the project. He seems like a very young player with endless talent. He can play an endless flowing arpeggio with seemingly little effort. However, so can Yngwie Malmsteen and he has never been praised on his song writing and arrangement either. That I think is the problem here. We have a musical project led by a guitar player, that has thin sounding guitars, that goes nuts more often than they should. The kid can play better than 99% of the axe wielders out today, but he doesn't seem to be able to know when to hold back. Sometimes you have to hold back for what is better for the song overall. There is tasteful guitar playing and there is endless guitar masturbation. This is very clearly the latter.

Now this is not to say that he can't write a song. As I said before the basic song structures are perfect. In fact there is more that is perfect with these songs than anything. Just imagine if I took a Beatles classic and just remixed it by slapping on any song by Yngwie Malmsteen over top of it. It would sound like the guitar soloing didn't fit. It would sound like a perfectly written song with meaningless guitar riffage just slapped over top with no thought put to if it should be. That is this cd in a nutshell. Absolutely amazingly produced, written, and recorded music with arpeggios slapped overtop for no reason. Someone get this band a good producer and have this thing remixed!

Did this Rock My Monkey? Nope. I was left frustrated because it is so close to perfection. It was like fucking a top Playboy model and having her throw you off just soon enough to give you swollen blue balls. So much potential and so much disappointment. This band has the chance to become one of the most original and amazing bands in a very long time. If only they can get a producer to reign in the arpeggio madness. Devin Townsend please help this band become all they can be! Waldemar Sorychta can you take care of this in between Eyes Of Eden tour dates maybe? I really want to hear what this band can do with a good producer. So much talent!
