So here we have a legendary band playing a style of music I like on one of my favorite all time labels. Problem is that I just do not like it. I have tried to get into this band and I never can. Everyone talks about them like they are the second coming of the anti-Christ, so I keep trying my best to wrap my head around what is so great about them. I just don't get it. The songs seem long for the sake of being long, the vocals crack all over the place, and the lyrics are sometimes repetitive as hell. Compare this to the Graveyard Dirt cd I reviewed a few hours ago and this thing pales in comparison.

Now if I was doing a ton of acid and was smoking from a bong the size of my head, this would probably make sense. At that point does it really matter though? I could be listening to "Puff The Magic Dragon" and think it is cool (it isn't). "Black Magic Rituals & Perversions" is ok background music, but just like the rest of the band's material there is a total lack of focus. There is no groove, no hook, no sense of the craft of songwriting at all. Now I understand that groove is more of a stoner rock thing than a doom thing, but this band needs something to give the listener something to grab onto.

Now if what you want is a seemingly endless space-like vibe that does nothing and goes nowhere, then this is your next favorite cd. This band comes off like that stoned philosopher that is so dumb they think they are the smartest one in the room. They look at the simplest thing like it’s some deep poetry sent from the gods. After the cd is played I can't seem to remember even one element. Not a single note, note a single lyric, not one chorus, not one guitar riff.

So did this Rock My Monkey? Yes, but in a way that is not the least bit memorable. It was by the book doom metal with all the right parts. It was heavy. The vocals didn't bug me. The guitar playing was sufficient. Like the difference between fucking a cheap slut from a bar or that girlfriend you stuck with for a few months. When your guy friends ask for details, sometimes all you can think to say is "She was there." Mere seconds after the cd is done there is nothing I can tell you about even the last song. So it is decent, but very forgettable.
