So I have to admit that I have never listened to anything Chris Volz has been involved with before, but as his first song plays I am not too excited. I swear I remember Flaw and Five Bolt Main being better than this though. The first song sounds like white boy reggae. Totally homogenized and watered down for the masses. The lyrics come off like a rich person trying to sound like they have street cred. "We're all made up of old souls, as we should be"? What the fuck is that supposed to mean? That is about as deep as a kiddie pool in winter. My wife asked if this band was a bunch of kids in their late teens because of the lyrics. When I told her this was solo cd from a guy in his mid 30's she was a little creeped out. He obviously has listened to a lot of black music (specifically Steveie Wonder), but not enough where he can pull it off with any real passion. It sounds forced and unnatural. The song "All My Life" sounds like something that could have been on TRL in the early 90's or something, but beyond that this thing sounds way too dated to grab anybody's attention. This continues for the entire cd. This cd is not a total loss though. I think it can be a perfect example of what happens when a cd is over produced and over thought. If you are looking for raw and reckless rock and roll, do not grab this cd. This is about as far from raw as it gets. The cadence on the verses of the song "Wrong" are so repetitive that it gets annoying. When he tries to use a gruff vocal it just sounds trite. The song lyrics are anthems for middle class drama queens. Ok, rich clueless bitches like Paris Hilton could probably relate to these lyrics as well. Anybody that has actually lived a real life will find this annoying as hell. On the song "Once Again" you will grow sick and tired of him saying he is “sick and tired.” Overall it is the lyrics that ruin this. They are so bad it's laughable. On the song "Sometimes" he says "Sometimes I want to cry, sometimes I want to fly away from everything, back into your heart again but I can't. Sometimes I want to die, sometimes I want to fly away from everything, back into your heart again, but I can't...and I won't allow myself to suffer through this. We just need to turn and walk away from the pain." Seriously, those are the lyrics to the chorus! I feel like I need to douche after listening to that one. This thing is too pussified for even a chick flick. I listened to the entire cd, but the rant is the same for every song. The music is average at best and the lyrics are painfully uninspired. The main part of "Dear Life" reminds me of some song from the 80's I can't quite place. Possibly a song from Stevie Wonder off of Songs In The Key Of Life. If anyone knows the song, let me know. Did this Rock My Monkey? No, it made my monkey almost fall off and turn inward. This cd both sucks and blows. That's something isn't it? ![]()
