Wired (now known as Stripwired....but for all intents and purposes in this review, they will be referred to as "Wired") is a Dallas, Texas band that sounds just a tad like AC/DC. I can say that all I could think about listening to this disc was AC/DC (it turns out that these guys were an AC/DC tribute band), not something I really want at first when listening to a band that's....well...not AC/DC. Everything in this band, from top to bottom, is reminiscent of 80's era AC/DC: from the vocals to the guitar tone, drums, bass...you name it. Fortunately, I personally like a little bit of AC/DC, so this band is not totally lost on me, even if it is a tribute band that writes their own songs. A big theme in this band's lyrical repertoire seems to deal with relationships with women, something roughly 50% of the world can relate to. There's no mystique to the lyrics here, no deep-thought invoking metaphorical poetry going on: just straight-forward rock and roll lyrics about life. For example, "Doghouse" is about being in....well, the doghouse. I myself have been there more than a few occassions as have most of my friends, so there ya go. "Another Shot" is a great drinking song for Friday night when you're with the boys and just want to forget about that chick that just stomped your balls into the ground. "Backdoor" is about jetting in a hurry after a romantic liaison, it seems. Some of us can relate to this one, as well. "Break Las Vegas" is about hitting up the Vegas night life and gambling until you're broke: or rich. Vocalist Darren Caperna sounds dead on like Brian Johnson, whilst drummer Jay Benzi, bassist Taylor Smith, and guitarist Mike Wagner carry the rock 'n' roll to your face in a style that only those from the 80's can truly remember. The production on this disc is absolutely crystal clear, like the waters off Hawaii or the Bahamas. Everything can be heard and nothing is overpowering anything else in the mix, yet it all comes across LOUD and clear, which is great. Producer Mike Mroz can be proud of the job done here with these guys, as the sound is as professional as one can get. On an interesting sidenote: Wired was employed for music in the movies twice, once for "Garage Days" and once for "Napoleon Dynamite". All in all I'd suggest this band to anyone who likes AC/DC, as this is basically an extension of the masters of rock. And while I can't say that this album is a "Back In Black", or a "Razor's Edge", it sure comes close to modern day embodiment. This is also (like AC/DC) a great drinking band, if that's your thing. So call some friends, gather some women, grab a beer and enjoy Wired's AC/DC worship. ![]()
